ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) - A Michigan girl whose face was mauled by a pet raccoon has had some fun the day before she's scheduled to begin a series of reconstructive surgeries.
The first procedure for 10-year-old Charlotte Ponce will be Wednesday at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.
Charlotte, her 11-year-old brother Marshall and her parents Sharon and Tim Ponce spent part of Tuesday at the Detroit Zoo.
Charlotte fed a giraffe, watched as a polar bear swam above her and came face-to-face with an ape.
In all, she says it was a "happy" day.
The raccoon attacked Charlotte when she was 3 months old in her Ravenna home.
The Ponces adopted Charlotte and Marshall in 2005, after Michigan terminated the biological parents' rights. Sharon and Tim Ponce are the children's great-aunt and great-uncle.
About $8,000 was raised for the surgery at a July fundraiser in Muskegon.
