CEDAR CREEK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A Muskegon police officer is recovering after being shot in a leg during a gunfight Saturday morning.

It happened just before 3:30 a.m. in the 4700 block of Oak Road near E. River Road in Muskegon County's Cedar Creek Township.

According to Muskegon County Prosecutor-elect D. J. Hilson, the Muskegon police officer was hit while assisting the Muskegon County Sheriff's Department by securing a perimeter in the area.

After the suspect fired at the officer, four other law enforcement officers returned fire and the suspect was wounded.

Hilson told 24 Hour News 8 that a third person was shot before gunshots were exchanged with the police officer.

According to Hilson, deputies were dispatched to the home after a report of a domestic related incident.

So far, authorities have not released the names of the suspect, the officer or the third person injured. In a news release, the Muskegon Police Department stated that both the officer and the suspect were taken to a hospital for treatment to their injuries.

Authorities say the officer suffered non-life threatening injuries. The suspect's condition is unknown. The suspect is in custody while recovering from his injuries.

The Michigan State Police is now investigating the case.
