FRUITPORT, Mich. (WOOD) - A Fruitport Township man has been arrested on charges that he abused a 10-month-old child.
On the afternoon of Feb. 1 at about 3 p.m., emergency personnel were called to a Fruitport home after receiving reports that a child was having difficulty breathing and was unresponsive.
The 23-year-old suspect, identified by neighbors as Donald Bayne, had been watching the child at his Fruitport home while the child's mother was at work, according to the Fruitport Township Police Department.
The child was taken to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, where it was discovered the the child was suffering from multiple head injuries. The child was then taken to DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids for further treatment. There is no word yet on the child's condition.
Further investigation by Children's Protective Services and Fruitport Police revealed that Bayne had struck the 10-month-old several times, police said.
Bayne was already on probation for felony killing or torturing animals, of which he was convicted in 2009 in Muskegon County.
Bayne was arrested on Friday and is being held at the Muskegon County Jail.
The name of the victim is being withheld.
