MUSKEGON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A Muskegon County woman has died after her car went into the Muskegon River Saturday.
Muskegon Township Police tells 24 Hour News 8 the woman is 54-year-old Theresa Duell of Laketon Township.
A couple parked near the end of Creston Street called authorities just after 2:30 a.m. Saturday to report a car that went down a ramp and into the river.
The witnesses reported the car floated down the river; but when Duell tried to get out, the car sank.
Township police officers and firefighters came out to the scene to search for Duell; some of the firefighters went into the frigid water to find her.
Firefighters recovered Duell before 3 a.m.. She was taken to an area hospital, but was pronounced dead later in the morning.
Rescue crews located and checked Duell's car to make sure no one else was with her in the car when it went into the river.
Authorities are investigating why the car went into the water.
