Fatal Wisc. wreck suspect claims amnesia

2 West Michigan men killed, 8 hurt in May crash

FOND DU LAC, Wisc. (WOOD) - A Wisconsin judge ruled Thursday that the man accused of driving his car into a formation of 12 West Michigan motorcyclists, killing two and injuring several others, is competent to stand trial.

Clinton Lovelace, 25, was allegedly using a controlled substance on May 31 when his car crossed the centerline on Highway 151 in Wisconsin's Fond du Lac County.

Dan Winsemius, 59, from Twin Lake died at the scene. Douglas Yonkers, 43, from Muskegon died at a hospital about a week later.

Lovelace now faces 12 charges in connection to the wreck, including two counts of vehicular homicide with a controlled substance. He has pleaded not guilty.

He was found mentally competent to stand trial Thursday, according to WLUK.

But a trial date hasn't been set, WLUK reports, because Lovelace -- who was also injured in the crash -- claims he has amnesia and can't remember the events of May 31.

The same judge who declared Lovelace competent is considering a request from Lovelace's defense attorney for a different psychological evaluation to prove whether her client has amnesia, according to WLUK. That attorney told the judge the defense team needs a clear ruling before the trial begins so it can plan a fair strategy.

The judge is expected to make a ruling within a few weeks.

The Fond du Lac courtroom was filled with motorcyclists who turned out to support the victims, WLUK reported.

Rick Van Dam, who lost a leg in the wreck, was released Wednesday from Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids.
