Raccoon-mauled girl's room redecorated

SPRING LAKE, Mich. (WOOD) - Friday was an exciting day for a little girl on a long road to recovery.

A raccoon attacked now-10-year-old Charlotte Ponce in her crib when she was just 3 months old. She just wrapped up her first round of reconstructive surgery at Beaumont Hospital.

While she was in Royal Oak for surgery, businesses and volunteers from across West Michigan fixed up the house and gave Charlotte's room a makeover.

She returned home to Spring Lake to see the change Friday.

Charlotte said what she likes most is that the room is all decked out in pink, which is her favorite color.

Her family said they can't thank everyone enough for all the support.

"That's awesome," said Charlotte's great-aunt and adopted mother Sharon Ponce. "It's awesome. I kind of knew about it, so I've been kind of sneak-peaking on the Internet. I knew it was coming, but it was so awesome to see it in person."

Charlotte will undergo a series of reconstructive surgeries over the next two years. Her doctor said the first surgery, which began repair on her nose, was a success.
