MUSKEGON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A teenage boy was arrested Monday and has been charged with raping a 10-year-old girl.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. Monday in Muskegon Township.

The 15-year-old suspect is someone the young girl knew, but he is not a relative. He raped the girl and then ran away, according to police.

The victim's mother walked into a room and found the partially undressed suspect standing over her partially unclothed daughter, investigators say in police reports.

The suspect admitted to sexually assaulting the girl using his finger, but the victim told police she was raped, Assistant Muskegon County Prosecutor Tim Maat said.

In a hearing Tuesday afternoon, the suspect's attorney entered a not guilty plea on the teen's behalf. The suspect appeared in the courtroom through a live video feed.

He will remain in the Muskegon County youth home until further court proceedings, a court referee ruled.

The suspect's mother told 24 Hour News 8 her only concern is for the victim. She does not want the teen back in her home and said she has not spoken with her son since the incident.

The suspect, who is a friend of the victim's brother, is on probation for drug use and has been convicted of stealing property valued between $200 and $1000.

Prosecutors are in the process of evaluating whether to charge the suspect as an adult.
