NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WOOD) - Mike D'Oyly, the former Mona Shores choir paraprofessional arrested on sex charges, "has a sexual obsession that is out of control," a prosecutor said at his arraignment Wednesday.
D'Oyly, 54, who appeared in court without an attorney though he said he has one, was officially charged with one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct with a current student, an incident that allegedly happened between August 1, 2010 and December 31, 2011.
Prosecutors said he used his status to establish a relationship with the male victim, who is between 16-18 years old.
If convicted of this high court misdemeanor, D'Oyly faces a maximum of two years in prison.
The Muskegon County Prosecutor's office asked the judge to retain a high bond for D'Oyly, and cited examples why.
"We immediately confiscated text messages which showed extremely disturbing and graphic communication with current students," said Muskegon County Prosecutor Tony Tague .
Prosecutors read some of the sexually graphic text messages he allegedly sent to current and former students.
"Mr. D'Oyly," said assistant prosecutor Joe Bader, "has a sexual obsession that is out of control."
Prosecutors did stop short of labeling D'Oyly a predator, pointing to unusual sexual behavior.
Bader said that D'Oyly at one point was caught in the Apple Avenue Kmart bathroom soliciting sex. No charges were filed, the prosecutor noted, because the complaining person could not be found.
The prosecutor also said they have a nude picture D'Oyly allegedly took of himself in the staff bathroom at Mona Shores High School and sent to a student. The prosecutor also said that D'Oyly admitted he had taken the photos in the school.
One text to a former student reads:
"I was just thinking, you remember the banquet last year? When you grinder (sic) against me? Were you trying to make a move on me back then?"
Tague said that he expects that D'Oyly will face more charges.
D'Oyly is also under investigation in Oakland County for CSC charges. It's alleged he took two current students to Oakland County on separate trips and that he shared a bed with each student.
The judge continued D'Oyly's $750,000 bond.
Mona Shores Superintendent Dave Peden confirmed to 24 Hour News 8 on Wednesday that D'Oyly is no longer employed by the district. Because of the ongoing due process, he could not indicate whether D'Oyly resigned or was fired.
