Kent ISD bus rolls over after crash

CASNOVIA, Mich. (WOOD) - Two Kent City students were on a school bus when it rolled over into a ditch Tuesday afternoon.

A pickup truck traveling south on Canada Road stopped at the M-46/Apple Avenue stop sign in Casnovia and didn't see the Kent County Intermediate School District school bus. The truck pulled onto M-46 and collided with the bus, police said. The bus driver overcorrected after the collision, and the bus rolled over into a ditch and landed on its side.

Two Kent City students were aboard the bus, said Kent City Community Schools Superintendent Mike Wiler.

The children are special education students who attend Lincoln School in Grand Rapids, Kent County Intermediate School District Communications Director Allison Kaufman told 24 Hour News 8. There were two adults on the bus at the time of the crash -- the driver and a bus aide.

No one on the bus was hurt, and the pickup truck driver was also uninjured.

The parents of the students were not able to be reached at the time of the crash, Wiler said. So a Kent City school bus in the area transported the two students home.

Authorities said the crash was likely caused by thick fog.

M-46 was closed in both directions for quite some time as crews cleared the scene, according to WOOD radio traffic reporter Kevin Richards.
