WHITEHALL, Mich. (WOOD) - A Lakewood Club teenager has died from injuries he suffered in a car crash Sunday morning.
Whitehall police responded to the single-car wreck at 2:30 a.m. in the 200 block of W. Lewis St. There were no witnesses to the crash. Police determined the vehicle driven by 18-year-old Cody Timothy Swanson left the road, hit a chain-link fence and ended up next to the Alcoa Howmet building.
Swanson was taken to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, and then transported by helicopter to a Grand Rapids hospital where he passed away later that day.
Police say excessive speed likely was a factor in the accident. They are awaiting the results of alcohol lab tests.
The Muskegon County Sheriff's Department contacted Swanson earlier that morning about a speed-related violation. The Montague Police Department contacted Swanson a few weeks ago in reference to a speed-related complaint.
The Whitehall Police Department says Swanson was at a party in the area of Russell Road and Bard Road, prior to Sunday's crash. Police are trying to identify people who were at this party or saw the crash, so you are asked to call them at (231) 894-2317 or Silent Observer at (231) 722-7463.
