MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WOOD) - A city council meeting was held Monday in Muskegon Heights, marking the first time the group has met since news broke of an investigation into the police department.
The state police's investigation was not on the agenda, but Mayor Darrell Paige spoke with 24 Hour News 8 after the work session.
"We just want people to know that we did call state police here for the investigation," Mayor Darrell Paige said. "We initiated it. They've been down there now for about three weeks, maybe. We don't know how long it's going to take and we're cooperating with them -- totally trying to get this done."
Michigan State Police said Monday it will be a couple months before the prosecutor ever sees reports from the department's investigation into the Muskegon Heights Police Department.
State police began investigating the department in March and found the evidence room is a mess and some of the money collected as evidence is missing.
Paige could not say if the ongoing investigation would affect any current or past cases that the police department has worked. He wants to reassure the public that the issue will be resolved.
When the investigation is complete, the prosecutor will decide whether criminal charges are issued.
