NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WOOD) - Passersby helped rescue two men from a car that crashed into a utility pole and burst into flames.

Thomas Devoursney and Anthony Wilson, both 52 and from Norton Shores, suffered serious injuries.

Devoursney was driving the 2006 Ford GT eastbound in the 1100 block of Sternberg Road in his city on Sunday afternoon. Police said he swerved to avoid colliding with a vehicle that was turning from westbound Sternberg Road onto a private road.

Devoursney lost control of the car, which skidded across all five lanes and hit the pole.

Witnesses reportedly extinguished flames on Devoursney and were able to pull Wilson out the car, according to a news release.

Rescue personnel arrived at the scene around 1:50 p.m. and took Devoursney and Wilson to a hospital.

Bystanders' photos sent to 24 Hour News 8 show the car was destroyed.

Norton Shores Police Chief Daniel Shaw told 24 Hour News 8 that Devoursney was speeding.

This crash remains under investigation. Any witnesses that have not spoken with investigators yet are asked to call police at 231.733.2691.
