HOWARD CITY, Mich. (WOOD) - A man who initially told police he was a passerby at a fatal hit-and-run accident in July 2012 was charged with two felonies in the death of Scott Gregory.

Ryan Patrick Bennett is accused of being intoxicated while driving causing death and with reckless driving causing death.

On July 20, Bennett told police he saw Gregory lying on W. Edgerton Street in Howard City, continued to drive to his nearby home and told his dad, who called 911.

Police received the call at 2:28 a.m. and "it was evident that the victim had been struck by a vehicle and was dead when emergency responders arrived on scene," according to a news release at that time.

Gregory was 25.

Bennett, 24, was arrested at that time but was not charged until Friday. Evidence from his car was analyzed by the Michigan State Police crime lab and connected to the incident.
