Man wanted in chase, crash surrenders

HOWARD CITY, Mich. (WOOD) - A man who allegedly led police on a high-speed chase down a one-lane highway and caused a rollover crash has turned himself in.

Alan Steven Phelps, 35, of Morley, surrendered to a Michigan State Police Fugitive Team on Wednesday afternoon after nearly two weeks of hiding.

He was wanted on five-count felony warrant out of Mecosta County for assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and one count of fleeing and eluding out of Montcalm County.

Police say they originally tried to stop Phelps' vehicle on the night of May 24 for violating a traffic law. But Phelps sped away and collided with another civilian vehicle, which rolled several times on U.S. 131 in a one-lane construction zone near the Pierson exit, police said.

After the crash, Phelps turned off his vehicle's headlights and got off the highway, causing pursuing police to lose sight of him, police said.

Further investigation soon identified the driver as Phelps, who already had several felony warrants out for his arrest.

He was spotted May 25 near Four Mile Road and Northland Drive in southern Mecosta County. At the time, police conducted an extensive search in this area but despite activating air support and K9 units, they did not find him.
