Dashcam: Suspect dad and deputy scuffle

SIDNEY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Dash cam video shows a man, who police say had been drinking before letting his son steer their SUV, struggled with a deputy attempting to arrest him.

Sean Bylsma, 34, was arrested Saturday and now faces numerous charges. Police said he was drunk when he crashed into a tree in Montcalm County and refused to pull over for a deputy. And they say his 4-year-old son was sitting on his lap the whole time.

A sheriff's deputy tried to pull over Bylsma's vehicle in Sidney Township after noticing front-end damage on the SUV. He allegedly disobeyed orders and continued to drive to his mother's residence. Once at the home, the deputy approached Bylsma, who was still in his vehicle.

"Shut the car off. Stay in the car. Stay in the car. What's going on?" the deputy can be heard saying on the dash cam recording.

But Bylsma didn't stay in the SUV as ordered. In the video, the deputy can be heard questioning him about damage to the SUV.

Suspect: A deer came out.
Deputy: You been in a crash?
Suspect: No. No crash.  
Deputy: Why is the car steaming, the trim's bloody, your boy's crying?
Suspect: We hit a deer right there at my grandma's.  
Deputy: Why did you throw a cup out the window pulling into the driveway?  
Suspect: Because I had a couple things on my mind...
Deputy: You been drinking?
Suspect: Yeah.
Deputy: Quite a bit?
Suspect: No. And I was letting him drive in my field and...
Deputy: Why didn't you stop when I turned my lights on?
Suspect: With this on here I couldn't see you at all.  

The deputy then ordered Bylsma to put his son in the car, but he again refused to obey orders.

Deputy: This your mom's place? Why don't you have your son sit back in the car for me?
Suspect: No, I would rather have my mom come get him please.  
Deputy: Well let's give her a call to come get him. You're not going up to the house.  
Suspect: I'm going.
Deputy: Sir. Sir. Put the child down now!

Off camera, the situation intensified after Bylsma made his way inside his mother's house and a woman got involved.

Deputy: Set your son down or I'm gonna Taser you.
Unidentified woman: No, no, no.
Deputy: Open the door.  ...Ma'am, open the door or I'm going to break it in.

But when the deputy attempts to arrest Bylsma, a struggle began.

Deputy: You're under arrest. Turn around. Step aside and take the child in the other room.  
Woman: I am calm. I am calm.
Deputy: Ma'am, step out of the way.

A scuffle can be heard.

"Stop it! Stop! Stop it! Stop resisting!" the deputy ordered.

On the dash cam, more yelling can be heard from the woman.

The deputy and the woman were then heard arguing over some type of weapon as Bylsma continued to resist arrest.

Deputy: Hand me that weapon.
Woman: You're not going to do that to him.
Deputy: Hand me that weapon. I do not want it in your control.  
Woman: I'm not going to touch it. I won't touch it, I won't touch it.  
Deputy: Stop resisting. You are under arrest. Do you understand? Do you understand? You are under arrest.

After being subdued, Bylsma delivered orders and a countdown to the deputy as he refused to give up.

"If you don't stop choking me, I'm going to freak out," he said. "I'm giving you a count of five. One, two, three, four..."

It took nearly 10 minutes for other officers to arrived and help take Bylsma into custody.

He was arraigned Monday on four charges -- felony fleeing and eluding a police officer, felony assault-resisting or obstructing a police officer, operating while license suspended, revoked or denied, and open alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Police said more charges could be forthcoming.
