Video: Deputy picks up deer

DWIGHT TOWNSHIP,, Mich. (WOOD) - A Huron County sheriff's deputy took matters into his own hands last week to remove a deer from a road.

According to Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson, Deputy Ryan Swartz arrived on the scene of an accident involving a car and a deer around 6 p.m. on Nov. 11 on Hellems Road in Dwight Township.

Nobody in the vehicle was injured. Deputy Swartz found the deer standing motionless in the middle of the road.

The deer was so still that Swartz originally thought it was a decoy, but was soon informed it had been standing in the road, apparently paralyzed with fear, since the accident happened 25 minutes before the deputy arrived.

Concerned that leaving the deer in the road would lead to another accident, Swartz needed to decide how to get it to move. So he simply picked up the small deer and carried it to the side of the road.

The deer eventually regained its wits and wandered off into a field.

The deputy's dash camera captured the encounter.

Authorities caution residents against moving deer in the manner that the deputy used. Swartz has many years of experience with deer that left him more qualified to pick the animal up.
