CDC joins probe into rare cancer cases

MARINE CITY, Mich. (AP) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has joined a probe into cases of a rare childhood kidney cancer cropping up in St. Clair and Macomb counties.

The Times Herald of Port Huron reports officials with the St. Clair County Health Department had a conference call Tuesday with CDC officials. The CDC is expected to conduct a review of the county's case statistics and provide ongoing direct consultation.

Republican U.S. Rep. Candice Miller of Michigan recently asked that the CDC to help state and local officials in their work.

The investigation started this year looking into the Wilms' tumor cases and now includes eight cases diagnosed since 2007.

The health department plans to update the public on the investigation Thursday night during a meeting in Marine City.
