ADA TWP., Mich. (WOOD) - A teenager was killed in a car accident late Friday night after another car ran a red light, hitting his car and pushing it into a house.
Police say the accident happened at about 11:30 Friday night at the intersection of Knapp and Grand River.
After investigating the crash, police say 17-year-old Thomas John Helderop, from Grand Rapids, was driving his 2001 Ford Taurus southbound on Grand River and ran the blinking red light at the intersection, hitting 19-year-old Nathan Alan Niemeier's 1991 Nissan.
The impact caused Niemeier, from Ada, to strike a nearby house. The collision with the house overturned Niemeier's car. He died at the scene from his injuries.
Helderop was taken to Spectrum by ambulance for treatment of head and leg injuries.
Helderop's passenger was treated for neck pain.
Both drivers and Helderop's passenger were wearing seatbelts, and police say they do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
