Teen: Teacher bought me abortion pills

Jon Jungkind accused of having sex with student

GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A teenager testified that one of her high school teachers had unprotected sex with her, got her pregnant, and bought her a series of abortion pills.

A hearing was held Thursday in 63rd District Court in Grand Rapids Township for Jon Jungkind. The Cedar Springs teacher faces two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Judge Sara Smolenski determined there is enough probable cause to believe Jungkind and the teen had sex, so the case is advancing to trial in circuit court.

The student on the witness stand said she and Jungkind had sex at his house when she was 17 last summer.

"I had a big crush on him," she said. "I loved him quite a lot for awhile and that's what led us to the sex. We were talking about that and it's the only thing I remember from the whole day. After we talked about that he said something to the effect that if you really want to I'll meet you in the bedroom and I'll give you a chance to say no. And I did not say no."

On cross examination, Jungkind's lawyer questioned why she didn't know the exact date the first encounter happened.

"I remember it," she said. "But I almost wanted to block it out of my head after it happened because of after awhile I started to feel real guilty and I almost wanted to forget about it and tried to."

Jungkind's lawyer asked the alleged victim about the time she spent with his client. She said it included going to watch a musical and a movie.

The girl said she thinks they had sex another time after a bonfire, but that she was drunk and isn't sure. She said after the encounter in August at Jungkind's home, she became pregnant.

She was asked if Jungkind helped her with her pregnancy in any way.

"He was," she answered. "He bought the abortion pill for me and I took it."

The relationship was outed by another student. At first, the girl at first denied it.

Cedar Springs superintendent Ron McDermed said Jungkind is still on administrative leave. The district filed charges with the tenure commission, and Jungkind appealed. The case is now in the hands of the tenure commission. His pay is being placed in an escrow account. If the district wins with the tenure commission, then the money will come back to the district.
