BYRON CENTER, Mich. (WOOD) - A former Byron Center teacher is under investigation because of accusations of "inappropriate conduct" with a student.

The Kent County Sheriff's Department confirmed to 24 Hour News 8 it is investigating whether a former Byron Center High School math teacher and girls' basketball coach did anything criminal.

Byron Center Public Schools Superintendent Dan Takens told 24 Hour News 8 that the employee resigned after the district put him on paid leave in November.

Takens said the former teacher and coach had been exchanging "excessive" text messages with a 14-year-old female student.

The superintendent said the district ordered the teacher and coach to stop last year, but learned that he had started exchanging messages again this year with that same student.

Takens said the former teacher and coach resigned of his own volition.
