KENTWOOD, Mich. (WOOD) - One week after flames gutted their sanctuary, the parish of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church met for Sunday Mass Sunday morning in a temporary home.
Around 200 people gathered in the auditorium of East Kentwood High School to worship and pray.
Diocese of Grand Rapids Bishop Walter Hurley greeted church members and led the service.
He spoke to the parish about moving forward from the fire in both acts and faith.
"And so I think as we gather here today, we need to mourn the loss that is very real, but at the same time to see the real basis of our faith and our hope," said Hurley. "Because our faith and our hope is not so much a building, but it's based on the Lord's presence in our lives."
The Bishop told the parish they will rebuild the church, but didn't commit to a timetable.
The church was destroyed when a firework landed on the roof and sparked the fire. Investigators ruled out every other possible cause.
