GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Michigan State Police are investigating a deadly crash on I-96 that killed 17-year-old Autumn Elwell from Bay City early Saturday morning.
Around 12:38 a.m., Elwell's sister, 25-year-old Ashley Donnely, also from Bay City, attempted to stop and turn around on eastbound I-96 after missing her exit onto US-131. As she was crossing the highway, her Pontiac Grand Am was hit by a Mack semi-truck going eastbound on I-96.
The crash created a pin-in situation, killing Elwell, the passenger in the front seat of the Pontiac.
Both drivers were taken to a hospital. Donnely was taken to a Grand Rapids hospital for treatment to serious injuries, while the 46-year-old Ohio man driving the semi-truck suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Police said everybody was wearing seat belts, and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
