WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) - One of the biggest supporters of the 28th Street Metro Cruise over the years was the late mayor of Kentwood, Richard Root. This year, organizers honored Root with a plaque and a moment of silence.
Root died June 9 after a long battle with cancer. He was 68.
He was a Corvette enthusiast and member of the Grand Valley Corvette Association. They held a motorcade in his honor on June 10.
On Saturday, his son, Damon, had his father's white Corvette at the cruise and received the plaque.
A moment of silence was held in his honor and the Wyoming High School marching band played a tribute to him in a ceremony at Rogers Plaza.
The Metro Cruise continues along the 28th Street corridor between Wyoming and Cascade Township through Saturday night.
24 Hour News 8's Marc Thompson contributed to this report.
