Pom-pon girls sick at Davenport camp

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - About 40 girls on high school and middle school pom-pon teams at a camp at Davenport University have gotten ill, and the university is cleaning all the surfaces in cooperation with the Kent County Health Department.

Around 400 girls from around the state are participating in the camp, and the ones who are ill exhibit Norovirus symptoms. The health department told 24 Hour News 8 one of the possibilities is someone arrived at the camp with the illness, then spread it around.

It's possible the origin will never be determined, and it may never be confirmed as Norovirus.

WebMD says , "People become infected with noroviruses when they eat food or drink liquids that have been contaminated; raw or undercooked oysters and raw fruits and vegetables have been implicated in some outbreaks. You can also get infected if you touch an object or surface that has been infected with the virus and then touch your nose, mouth, or eyes."

The pom-pom camp began Tuesday, and was scheduled to end Friday. However, organizers canceled the rest of the camp as of Thursday.
