CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich. (WOOD) - A 19-year-old was arrested after Cedar Springs police found an unregistered handgun and a homemade pipe bomb during a check on Sept. 23.
Robert Andrews was arraigned Monday for a bomb violation.
That afternoon, police said in a release, a grandfather was upset the teen was yelling and cursing at his grandchildren. He knocked on the young man's door, saw he had a handgun with a round in the chamber, then left and called police.
When police arrived at the home in the 100 block of S. Main Street, the young man let the officer in. He saw a number of handguns and a small bottle containing gunpowder and hundreds of BBs and birdshot.
Andrews described it as a novelty item he made about a year ago. One of the handguns was found to be unregistered.
Police said there doesn't appear to be any malicious intent, just poor judgment.
"There was no indication that he was making a number of these or had some kind of manufacturing of bombs going on," said Cedar Springs Police Chief Roger Parent.
The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad was brought in to take apart the device.
