Passenger traffic down at Ford Airport

Airport: Decline reflected nationally

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Operators of the Grand Rapids airport say passenger traffic has fallen over the past year.

Gerald R. Ford International Airport reports that it had 2.13 passengers in 2012, down 6 percent from 2.27 million in 2011. The airport had 2.18 million passengers in 2010.

Airport executive Phil Johnson tells Mlive.com says the decline was expected and reflects a nationwide trend brought about by airline mergers and service cuts.

Ford Airport lost several connections last year, including a Frontier Airlines flight to Milwaukee and a direct flight to Reagan International in Washington.

United Airlines announced in December it would begin flying twice daily between Grand Rapids and Washington's Dulles International Airport on May 1.
