No jail for host tied to fatal crash

HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - The 18-year-old who allowed minors to drink at a party attended by two teens who later died in what police say was a drunk driving crash will not serve any jail time.

Krysta Howell, 15, and Timothy See, 17 were killed in a rollover crash on the I-196 off-ramp to Chicago Drive in Wyoming in the early morning hours of May 20.

The two, along with four other Wyoming Park High School teens, were returning home from a party at Shane Harlan's Allendale apartment.

One of the teens who survived the crash said everyone in the car had been drinking. Authorities said they got the alcohol at Harlan's party.

Harlan pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of allowing minors to consume alcohol in June.

Thursday, he was sentenced to serve two years probation and must pay $1,585 in fines and costs.

He will serve the next five Saturdays in a work program, but will not serve any jail time.

The judge did not lecture Harlan, and was instead straight forward about the 18-year-old's sentence.

Harlan declined to make a statement to the judge during the proceedings.

But outside the courtroom, Harlan said the situation was a "life lesson."

"Drinking and driving is not worth it, and underage drinking is not the way to go. I've learned a lot of life lessons," he said.

He said he wants to "move on."

Takunda Mavima, 17, was driving the car when it crashed. He now faces eight felony charges.
