Murder charge leveled at Walker teen

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A 14-year-old male was officially charged as an adult with open murder Thursday morning for a Sunday shooting that killed a 20-year-old man.

Jared Seagraves was arraigned by video in the death of Michael Haminger, and is being held on a $250,000 bond. His parents were with him at the detention center, but did not speak during the arraignment.

Seagraves will be tried as an adult though the case will be handled through the juvenile system. That provides the judge some leeway at the sentencing if he is convicted of the charge.

In what is called a Prosecutor Designation Case, the Kent County Prosecutor's Office consulted with Haminger's family and decided to charge the teen as an adult.

A preliminary exam, to determine if there is enough evidence to move the case to trial, is set for Oct. 11.
