GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A 45-year-old man has been sentenced to prison for beating a fellow transient to death in June 2012.
Scott Zandbergen was sentenced Tuesday to 10 to 15 years in prison.
He pleaded guilty in early January to second-degree murder in the death of fellow transient Edward Schmeling.
Zandbergen beat Schmeling, 54, to death with a metal pipe at a homeless camp off 28th Street in Wyoming.
In probable cause documents obtained by 24 Hour News 8 in June, police said Zandbergen lied about what he was wearing and who was present at the time Schmeling was killed. They also said Zandbergen changed his story as details became available and had blood on both his shoes and bedding.
Zandbergen received credit for 231 days served.
