GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A man convicted of breaking more than a dozen bones in an infant's body will spend at least 14 years behind bars.
Andrew Valdez, 25, was convicted in August of first- and second-degree child abuse in connection to a fall 2011 incident.
He was sentenced Thursday to 14 years and 7 months to 22 and a half years in prison. He received credit for 164 days served. He will also have to pay $68 in state costs and $130 to the Crime Victim Rights Fund.
Valdez, of Alpine Township, was originally arrested in October 2011 after his ex-girlfriend's son was admitted to the hospital with 14 broken bones.
He told 24 Hour News 8 at the time that he hadn't hurt the baby, but investigators said he admitted to the abuse in an interview.
And court documents show Valdez told the Kent County Sheriff's Department that he was "forceful" when he removed the child from his car seat last week, and he became "upset" with the child.
