Scrap seekers mistaken for abductors

LOWELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - It appears at least one reported attempted abduction in Kent County was nothing of the sort.

Sheriff's investigators told 24 Hour News 8 that two people in a pickup truck were picking up scrap metal along a road, and not trying to abduct two young female pedestrians.

A 21-year-old woman and a 14-year-old girl were walking along Barnsley Road in Vergennes Township on the night of Sept. 6 when they noticed the suspicious vehicle. The driver shut the vehicle's lights off and got out of the vehicle.

Some neighborhood teens noticed the situation and scared off the driver.

Police said they are unsure if this incident is connected to a similar situation less than an hour earlier on Finn Avenue in Lowell Township. A 28-year-old female jogger told police a man got out of his vehicle and started following her. She ran away to a nearby house to get help.

The vehicle was described as a light-colored pickup truck.
