CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A lumber company that has been in business for more than five decades is going out of business and will close for good in June.
Owners Ed and Gary Meekhof told 24 Hour News 8 Meekhof Lumber Company, 6045 28th St. SE in Cascade Township, will close for good on June 30.
Meekhof Lumber has been in business since 1957 when it was started by Gerrit Meekhof.
The business features commercial and industrial lumber, builder's supplies and custom cutting. It specializes in redwood and cedar lumber for building homes.
Due to its niche market in that lumber, the business couldn't sustain a profitable business when new home construction declined, Ed Meekhof said.
The business sits on just under five acres of land, which has already been sold to Fox Motors. Officials will use the land to expand Delta Imports, located next door, at 6025 28th St. SE.
The company employs four people, all of whom are members of the Meekhof family.
