GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (WOOD) - Keishawn Mann will stay in custody.
A Kent County judge ruled Thursday morning the 13-year-old Kentwood teen, charged with the murder of his stepfather earlier this year, should stay in the custody of the juvenile justice system pending his trial.
Keishawn appeared in court wearing an orange, juvenile detention shirt and sat next to his mother at the defense table. The color signifies he is following all of the rules while in detention, and was one of the bases for his lawyer's request that the court set bond in the case.
The teen's lawyer, Frederick Johnson called Keishawn a model son.
"We don't think there's a risk to the community," said Johnson.
Kent County Assistant Prosecutor Vicki Seidl disagreed.
"He's not a model son. He went to within six inches of his stepfather's head and shot him. That is not a model son."
Judge Daniel V. Zemaitis agreed with Seidl, denying bond in the case.
Keishawn will be tried as an adult in juvenile court for allegedly killing Jermelle Stokes, 35, at their Kentwood home on Jan. 25.
Seidl said there are ongoing discussions on a plea deal, but won't say whether it would involve jail or prison time.
