HIV suspect jailed for bond violation
Faces charges of failing to disclose HIV status

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - An HIV-positive Kent County man who was waiting for his trial on charges he didn't tell sex partners of his condition is back in jail.
Jeremy Merithew had been out of jail on bond. But Wednesday, he was back in court for violating that bond.
The court had ordered him to stay off the Internet while he was waiting for his trial. The Kent County Sheriff's Department says it arrested Merithew again after it confirmed that he was back online, having posted on a gay dating site looking for sex.
A judge Wednesday boosted his bond from $5,000 to $300,000. Merithew remained in the Kent County jail Wednesday evening.
After Merithew's arrest in August 2012, he told 24 Hour News 8 he disputed the charge, saying he did tell his partner he is HIV-positive. He also criticized the law.
"These laws were made back when they didn't really understand the disease and there wasn't the treatment for it and people were dropping dead," said Merithew. "These laws were created out of fear."
Merithew will be back in court Friday to settle an issue leading up to his trial.
