GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A Plainfield Township man will go to trial after his pit bull got loose and attacked a young girl in late July.

Salvatore Pizzo faces a felony dangerous animal charge and two misdemeanors because his dog was running at large and unlicensed.

At a Wednesday status conference, Pizzo rejected a plea deal offered by prosecutors, sending the case to trial.

Paytan Wiersum was injured July 31 when she was attacked her in her front yard the day before her 9th birthday. She was taken to the hospital and treated for more than a dozen bite wounds. Her injuries required about 30 stitches.

"I don't think it was on purpose," Pizzo told 24 Hour News 8 in August, adding that he was sorry about what happened. "I think it was an accident."
