GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Trenton Ellis was not even a year old when his mother's ex-boyfriend allegedly suffocated him in August. His brain is 70% damaged, and he is blind and deaf, family members said.

Andrew Basinski is charged with first-degree child abuse. Trenton's mother lost all parental rights to her children in September.

But Trenton's father and stepmother, Austin Crowl and Michelle Whalen, are planning a fundraiser to celebrate his first birthday.

The fundraiser is set for Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. at Milestones Child Development Center , 2370 Belmont Center Drive. It's $5 for adults and $3 for kids.

Watch the video for complete details and an interview with Crowl and Whalen.
