GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - A Grandville woman suffered serious burns and her home is a total loss after a fire Sunday morning.
Just before 5 a.m. Sunday, Grandville Fire Department was called out to a house fire in the 2400 block of Watercrest Court.
"There were two occupants at the time the fire broke out; a husband and wife," said Grandville Fire Chief Michael May. "They were able to self-evacuate to a neighbor's house, but the female occupant was quite severely burned."
When crews arrived, they found the house fully engulfed in flames.
"We briefly made an interior attack, but they had to withdrawal into a defensive posture pretty much immediately because of the extent of the fire," said May.
With the help from several Wyoming Fire Department units, the fire was under control around 5:45 a.m. The fire was put out a few hours later; the house is a total loss.
A man and woman living in the home escaped the fire to a neighbor's house before crews arrived. However, the woman was seriously burned in the fire and was taken to a hospital.
The fire chief said investigators believe the know what caused the fire.
"Everything right now is pointing toward careless smoking, or a smoking accident, but we've still got some work to do to verify that," said May.
