Fire danger in West Mich. increasing

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A hot and mostly dry Memorial Day Weekend will raise the risk of fire danger.

While the big fires are up north, West Michigan is not immune from the danger.

The further north people travel, the fire danger increases, so they may want to avoid setting up a campfire.

Currently, fire danger conditions in West Michigan and much of southern lower Michigan are considered moderate. This could increase even more if it doesn't rain and the wind picks up.

"The biggest thing is is is to stay in attendance of the fire at all times. Make sure somebody's there with it," said Lt. Doug Venema from the Cascade Fire Department. "That when they're done we ask that they extinguish it. Don't just walk away from it, and let it burn out on it's own. We suggest dousing it with water and making sure it's completely out."
