Farewell to Army Spc. Zachary Shanafelt

Combat medic leaves wife, baby son behind

ROCKFORD, Mich. (WOOD) - Friends, family and fellow veterans bade farewell to Zachary Shanafelt Friday morning in a service in Rockford.

Shanafelt, 24, was a combat medic who was injured in 2011 in Afghanistan. He died recently at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC.

The Patriot Guard escorted his body from the airport Thursday afternoon to Pederson Funeral Home in Rockford. About 100 people lined 10 Mile Road to pay tribute to Shanafelt as the motorcade passed.

The funeral at Pederson Funeral Home included full military honors.

The 2006 graduate of Creston High School in Grand Rapids leaves behind a wife and 13-month-old son.
