EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - An East Grand Rapids High School graduate died after being hit by a taxi cab in New York.
Leighton Parnham graduated from East Grand Rapids in 2011. He was playing on a soccer team in New York City while attending the Fashion Institute of Technology.
His soccer coach in New York, Stavros Zomopoulos, confirmed to 24 Hour News 8 that Parnham was hit by a taxi cab in Brooklyn late last month.
Parnham passed away after several days in the intensive care unit at Bellevue Hospital.
Zomopoulos said in a phone conversation that he received a call from Parnham's father Tuesday informing him of the death.
The coach called Parnham a "good kid."
"We're devastated by this," he said. "It's unbelievable."
The East Grand Rapids soccer team, with which Parnham played, will honor Parnham at its first game on Aug. 17. The coach said on a memorial Facebook page for Parnham that the team wants to fill the stands to pay tribute to Parnham's legacy.
A memorial fund has been set up to help cover funeral and medical expenses at Huntington bank.
