WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) - A woman accused of attacking her parents with a hatchet and another weapon will undergo a competency exam.
Amber Wilson, 28, appeared in court Wednesday afternoon for a preliminary hearing. Her attorney asked the judge to adjourn the hearing and requested a psychiatric evaluation to determine if Wilson is competent to stand trial or if she is criminally responsible. The judge agreed to the request.
Wilson allegedly attacked her mother and stepfather as they slept in their Wyoming home on March 7. Court documents say her parents awoke and saw Wilson, who was holding a hatchet, standing over them. Wilson yelled, "I'm gonna kill you! You're going to die!" according to the documents.
She allegedly wounded her mother with the hatchet and then pulled another weapon on her stepfather when he tried to intervene, injuring him as well. The parents managed to escape and flagged down a police officer.
Wilson has been charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. If convicted, she could spent the rest of her life in prison.
She remains held without bond.
Her parents were not in court, but some other family members were. The sister of Wilson's stepfather says both mom and stepfather are recovering from their injuries. She said the weapon Wilson used was not a hatchet, but was rather an ax.
