GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Michael Piranian, detectives said, beat a sleeping woman after setting a fire to her Sparta home and intended to kill her and another person. Instead, he killed a young woman trapped in the basement of the home.
Monday, the 62-year-old man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and a lesser charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm and will spend at least 30 years in prison.
In March, Kori VanHulle was living at the house and was not his intended target. She died in the fire at the age of 24.
Piranian will be officially sentenced in November.
