ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Andrew Valdez told 24 Hour News 8 he didn't know how his ex-girlfriend's 3-month-old son got 14 broken bones, but a court document 24 Hour News 8 found Wednesday tells a different story.
According to the documents, 24-year-old Valdez told the Kent County Sheriff's Department that he was "forceful" when he removed the child from his car seat last week, and he became "upset" with the child.
The report said that Valdez grabbed the baby's arm, chest, and leg, and that the baby started crying.
"It's probably one of the worst child abuse cases I've seen in a long time," said Kent County Undersheriff Jon Hess.
The admissions allegedly happened during an interview Valdez gave to deputies. The document goes on to say that Valdez was angry with the baby's mom because "she was making him get the child ready."
Valdez was charged with one count of second-degree child abuse. Valdez told 24 Hour News 8 he isn't responsible for hurting the baby, identified as Bryson, and he was surprised when he was arrested.
"I don't know what they're talking about," Valdez said. "I feel like I'm being falsely accused."
But Hess said the Sheriff's Department is being thorough:
"We definitely have our facts in order that we present to the prosecutor because this is a very serious case. And if we are going to make an arrest in this case, we want to make sure we are arresting the right person," he said.
As a habitual offender, Valdez could face up to six years in prison if he is convicted of harming the baby.
24 hour news 8 has also learned a child neglect case has been opened investigating the boy's mother. Investigations like this are typical in child abuses cases.
24 Hour News 8 is continuing to work on this story and will have updates as they become available.
