WALKER, Mich. (WOOD) - A preliminary hearing was held for Jack Jacqmain Friday, the man accused of the brutal stabbing and murder of Mark Moore in August of 2010.

Jacqmain allegedly chose his target at random. He stabbed Moore on the balcony of a Grand Rapids Motel 6 while Moore was talking on a cell phone to his wife.

Witnesses staying at the hotel say on the day of the murder Jack Jacqmain was outside his second story room taking shots at passers by with a make believe gun. He was doing so all while yelling 'bang, bang' and singing loudly 'I am Popeye the sailor man."

Despite his apparent behavior the day of the stabbing, the very first order of business in Friday's hearing in the Walker District Court was to determine if Jacqmain was competent to participate in his own defense.

He spoke out during the hearing and was warned a number of times by Judge Peter Versluis to remain quiet.

In one instance, the judge asked Jacqmain to quiet down so the attorney could question Mark Moore's cousin and roommate the night of the murder, Kenneth Sullivan.

The most emotional testimony during the hearing came from Moore's wife Jarrin.  She described a part of what ended up being her last conversation with her husband.

"I was talking to him and telling him what was going on and I heard a male voice in the background," she tearfully described. "But, I couldn't make out what they were saying --- and I heard Mark say 'yeah man that's cool, just keep it over there'."

If Jacqmain does stand trial, it is likely that his mental state will come up again. His attorney told 24 Hour News 8 that her client's competency to stand trial is not indicative of his criminal responsibility, and she plans to raise the issue later.
