GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - After 2.3 million Toyota Motor Co. vehicles were recalled Tuesday, drivers who already own the affected cars are awaiting answers.
The vehicles were recalled to fix accelerator pedals that stick -- the latest quality problem to confront the world's No. 1 automaker, which suspended U.S. sales of eight models.
Shirley Mallett bought her 2009 Camry more than one year ago, and now she wonders whether the vehicle is safe.
"I've been waiting on them to call, because I don't want anything to happen, you know," she said Wednesday.
The sales suspension includes the 2009-2010 RAV4, the 2009-2010 Corolla, the 2009-2010 Matrix, the 2005-2010 Avalon, the 2007-2010 Camry, the 2010 Highlander, the 2007-2010 Tundra and the 2008-2010 Sequoia.
Local dealers were asked not to comment to reporters. The affected vehicles are still being sold, but cannot be driven off the lot until the problem is fixed, 24 Hour News 8 was told.
The problem that was first dismissed as an issue with the floor mat is now given a whole new level of attention.

As for Mallett, she wonders what to do next.
"I don't want the car to take off and I don't know how to stop it," she said.
For now, she's on hold.
"Just to be on the safe side, I'm waiting on them to call me to bring my car in," Mallett said.
Toyota has alerted drivers to shift the car into neutral if the gas pedal sticks. For now, the automaker is looking for a solution -- one consumers and dealers would like to see come fast.
