WALKER, Mich. (WOOD) - Members of the Kenowa Hills track team helped the Thanks A Million campaign put food in front of needy West Michigan families.
The mobile food bank, operating since August, made its way into northwest Kent County Friday afternoon. Trucks of food have made 35 stops through the west side of the state, giving families everything from baby food to produce, beverages and more.
Enterpreneur Bill Cooper -- a candidate to replace outgoing US Rep. Pete Hoekstra in Michigan's 2nd District -- is behind this effort. But Cooper said politics has no connection to what he's doing. It's been an opportunity to meet people and get other organizations involved in the mobile food bank effort.
Volunteers run these distributions. They buy their food with donations from the group Feeding America, formerly known as the Gleaners, and they'll usually get food donated that is still good but on the verge of expiration and unable to be sold.
Families often wait for hours.
