GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A man who gave his 1-year-old grandson a dose of morphine that killed him has been sentenced to prison.
Greg Busby will spend seven to 15 years in prison on top of sentences for violating parole. He was also ordered to pay restitution for the funeral expenses, a victim rights fee of $130 and state costs of $68.
Antonio Garcia-Lazarski was declared dead at his grandparents' Gaines Township home on Feb. 10.
Toxicology results revealed Antonio had "a lethal dose of morphine and a non-lethal dose of Benadryl in his system."
Busby told detectives he didn't mean to harm his grandson, court documents show. He said he wanted to calm the baby down and make him feel better. Busby pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter in August.
Busby was already on parole after being convicted of forgery and counterfeiting at the time of the child's death.
