GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A man who police say made up a story about an attempted abduction of his 2-year-old son has been charged with a misdemeanor.

Eugene Rose, 32, of Kent City turned himself in to Kent County authorities on Monday.

Rose originally told authorities that he had fought off a man attempted to walk away with his 2-year-old son on Sept. 4, according to the Kent County Sheriff's Department, though he didn't report the incident until Sept. 6.

Then, according to the Sheriff's Department, he admitted on Sept. 18 to fabricating the story.

Rose was charged with lying to a peace officer during the investigation of a crime punishable by four or more years in prison. That's a misdemeanor punishable by up to 2 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000, according to the Michigan Penal Code.

Detectives are presenting the case to the county prosecutor, who may decide to charge Rose with filing a false police report. In this case, that would be a felony, according to the Michigan Penal Code.

Rose was released on $500 cash or surety bond Tuesday.

Arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 3.
