GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Too much time passed between Janet Chandler's murder and the filing of a civil lawsuit by her parents against a security firm who employed the men who killed her, Judge Janet Neff ruled Tuesday in dismissing the suit.
Janet Chandler was gang raped and brutally murdered in 1979. But it wasn't until 2006 that the perpetrators were brought to trial. Robert Lynch, Carl Paiva, Freddie Parker, Tony Williams and Bubba Nelson were eventually convicted of the slaying. They worked as guards for the Wackenhut Corporation and were in Holland at that time providing security during a plant strike.
Laurie Swank was also convicted in the case, though she did not work for Wackenhut.
James and Glenna Chandler filed a civil lawsuit in 2008 against Wackenhut, claiming they did not supervise their workers.
But Neff ruled the statute of limitations expired in 1982, three years after Janet Chandler was killed.
