LOWELL, Mich. (WOOD) - Five Grand Haven High School students were seriously injured when the car they were in went across the median on I-96 near Alden Nash and rolled over.

Five ambulances were sent to the scene, and all five students were rushed to area hospitals.

School officials identified the students as Brittany Olds,16;  Madison Case, 17; Hannah DeVecht, 17; Emily Bogner, 16; and 16-year-old Danielle Michaels.

Investigators told 24 Hour News 8 the eastbound car hit the turnbuckle at the beginning of the cable barrier, crashed through that side, went across the median and flipped over the top of the west side cable barrier.

The three teens in the back seat were unbuckled and were ejected. The two teens in the front were buckled.

Grand Haven schools superintendent Keith Konarska told 24 Hour News 8 the girls were headed to the Breslin Center in East Lansing to watch the Grand Haven girls basketball team play in the semi-finals in a 1 p.m. game.

A faculty member from the school was following the car and began to help as soon as the crash happened.

Westbound I-96 was closed for hours between Alden Nash and Segwun. One lane was opened at 2 p.m., and both lanes were re-opened around 3 p.m.

24 Hour News 8 will continue to follow this story.
